چکیده

Multimedia and multiservice broadband networks (e.g. Broadband-ISDN and ATM based LANs) will be implemented using Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). In this paper we consider the combined control problem of flow rate and bandwidth (capacity, service rate) at the virtual path level in ATM based networks under nonstationary conditions. A fluid flow model in the state variable form is used to describe the time varying mean behaviour of a virtual path. A nonlinear control approach is adopted to derive the control strategy for the single node, finite buffer and server, case. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using analysis and simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves effective server and buffer utilisation (as predicted by analysis) and by appropriate choice of the control design variables it achieves zero cell loss (even for traffic demands, which if not controlled would suffer cell losses). Hence the proposed scheme avoids retransmissions which as a result would reduce network utilisation.

Integrated Control of Connection Admission, Flow Rate, and Bandwidth for ATM based Networks: a comparative evaluation

The combined control problem of connection admission, flow rate, and bandwidth allocation (capacity, service-rate) in ATM based networks under nonstationary conditions has recently attained considerable importance. In an earlier paper we adopted a nonlinear control approach to derive an integrated control strategy (for the finite buffer and finite server case) that is insensitive to any propaga...

Integrated Control of Connection Admission, Flow Rate, and Bandwidth for ATM Based Networks

We consider the combined control problem of connection admission, flow rate, and bandwidth allocation (capacity, service-rate) under nonstationary conditions. A fluid flow model in state variable form describes the time varying mean behaviour of Available Bit Rate (ABR) traffic, which competes with Guaranteed Traffic for network resources. Using nonlinear control we derive an integrated control...

An integrated switching strategy for ABR traffic control in ATM networks

In this paper we extend earlier results on combined control problem of connection admission, flow rate, and bandwidth allocation (capacity, service-rate) in ATM based networks under nonstationary conditions to the multiple node path case. We propose a nonlinear switching strategy, and show that it is effective in controlling a mix of ABR and Guaranteed traffic. We derive bounds on the mix betwe...

First-order rate-based flow control with dynamic queue threshold for high-speed wide-area ATM networks

In this paper we present a new rate-based flow control scheme for ATM ABR services and analyze its performance. The proposed algorithm, which we refer to as First-order Rate-based Flow Control (FRFC) is the most simple form of queue-length-based flow control. The asymptotic stability, the steady-state throughput, queue length and fairness, and the transient behavior are analyzed for the case of...

Virtual Path Assignment and Virtual Circuit Routing in ATM Networks

The use of virtual paths in ATM networks reduces the call set-up delays, simplifies the hardware in the transit nodes and provides simple virtual circuit admission control. However, it also reduces the degree of capacity sharing and thus, increases the call blocking rate. We consider the following problem: given a network topology, link capacity of each physical link and traffic requirement of ...
